Have you thought about where you plan on traveling to for Christmas of 2014? Yes, Christmas and the other winter holidays are still around six months away. However, there is no harm in planning your trips now and daydreaming until the time comes. I’m not the only one who daydreams about amazing vacations, right?
For us, we love visiting warmer climates in the months of December and January for Christmas because we like to escape the cold temperatures where we live every once in a while. Also, the winter in the Northern Hemisphere usually means shorter days and gloomier weather, so visiting a tropical beach vacation destination is something that I always love to do.
Tenerife is a great place to visit if you are looking for a vacation destination for the Christmas holiday. Christmas in Tenerife tends to extend until the first week in January because of 3 Kings.
In December on the island of Tenerife, you can still do the same normal activities as you would in the summer such as laying out in the sun, getting a tan, participating in water activities such as jet skiing and/or swimming, enjoying one of the many beautiful beaches, going for a hike at Mount Teide, visiting one of the island’s many luxurious resorts, and more.
How is the temperature in Tenerife in December and January?
December and January are both great months to visit Tenerife. The average temperature during these two months is usually around 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit (around 16 degrees Celsius), with a water temperature of around 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius).
The average amount of sunshine during these two months is usually around seven to eight hours as well.
All of this put together usually means much better weather and sunshine than most wintery places in the world. You are still able to spend a few hours usually each day at the beaches while in Tenerife in the months of December and January, which is great! I would much rather have 60 to 65 degree Fahrenheit weather than the cold 10 degrees Fahrenheit that we typically get where I live.
Many Brits tend to visit Tenerife during December and January for their Christmas holiday, and we all know that Tenerife is much warmer than what the UK experiences in those two months. However, it is always wise to bring light coverups just in case it gets a little cold at night – but it probably won’t ever get as cold as it does wherever you are from.
What type of celebrations does Tenerife have?
The Canary island of Tenerife is a great place to visit if you want to celebrate Christmas in a tropical destination. There are plenty of events for the Christmas holiday, so you won’t feel like you are missing out on the normal Christmas traditions either.
Many of the towns in Tenerife have Christmas celebrations and festivals. Also, many of the British bars on the south of Tenerife have fun Christmas celebrations from December 24th to December 26th.
If you are having a long vacation on the island of Tenerife and will still be on the island for New Year’s Eve, there are also plenty of events and festivals going on for that as well. The city of Los Cristianos and others all hold several fun Christmas events for you and your family. There are always plenty of live music, concerts, food festivals, fireworks, dancing, and more.
Many homes and businesses will put up Christmas lights, Christmas trees, pour fake snow on their lawn, create beautiful nativity scenes, put fake snow/fog on their windows and more on their buildings, so it will still feel very Christmas-like when you visiting Tenerife. The good thing is that you won’t have to experience any frigid weather.
Does the island of Tenerife celebrate 3 Kings?
If you are still in Tenerife in January (Christmas and the winter holidays tend to extend into January in Tenerife), then there are plenty of festivals and events to celebrate the 3 Kings as well. The city of Los Cristianos and others all put on elaborate celebrations with camels, choirs, drinking, dancing, partying, and more to celebrate this day.
Will there be delicious traditional Christmas food?
One of my most favorite things about Christmas is all of the delicious Christmas food. You won’t have to miss out on all of that just because you are on vacation though. Many of the restaurants and hotels offer traditional Christmas meals including turkey and vegetables for the tourists and locals to enjoy.
Will everything be open on the island of Tenerife?
It is smart to remember that many businesses on the island of Tenerife will close early on Christmas Eve and they will probably be closed on Christmas Day as well. This is because many of these businesses are family-owned and the employees will all be celebrating the holidays with their family members.
However, if you are in the more touristy cities such as Playa de las Americas and/or Costa Adeja, then mostly everything will probably be open since they tend to cater to tourists.
British bars are almost always open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day as well, so if you find one of those then you should have no problem.
Is there ever any snow while in Tenerife?
If you are still wanting snow, don’t worry, Mount Teide usually has some snow in the winter months. You can sled down certain parts, build snowmen, play in the snow, and more.
