How to Get a Passport

Neither of us have passports. WHAT? I know! It makes me upset also. We have done a lot of traveling lately, but they have all been within the U.S. or to U.S. territories (where just our birth certificates will do).

Why haven’t we gotten our passports yet? It’s just laziness. We’ve been putting it off forever.

Below are the official steps to get a passport:

1. Fill Out Form DS-11: Application For A U.S. Passport
2. Submit Completed Form DS-11 In Person
3. Submit Evidence of U.S. Citizenship
4. Present Identification
5. Submit a Photocopy of the Identification Document(s) Presented (Step 4)
6. Pay the Applicable Fee
7. Provide One Passport Photo

What are the processing times to get a passport?

Processing times can be found in the link above, but generally it takes around 4-6 weeks, and 2-3 weeks for expedited service to receive your passport. For expedited service, I know someone who received theirs within 1 week, so sometimes it CAN be sooner, but not always.

It’s really always best to be on the safe side and set aside as much time as you can to receive your passport. It would not be pleasant to miss a trip or a flight because you didn’t receive your passport on time.

What are the fees?

Do you have a passport? Where have you gone with it so far?
