How To Save Money On Airfare

How To Save Money On AirfareIf you are in the middle of planning your next vacation, I’m sure you have thought about whether or not you will fly.

In some cases (such as traveling over an ocean), traveling by plane is your best bet because a cruise ship may take longer than you are wanting.

However, airfare prices just seem to be ever-increasing. What’s a person supposed to do if they want to go on a nice trip far away, but they don’t want to drop a month’s salary on their plane ticket?

Don’t worry, there are plenty of ways to save a bundle on your next trip. Continue reading below to find out!

Fly during the off-season.

If you are wanting to save some extra money on your vacation, you should always do your research as to when your vacation destination has its high and low season. The off-season usually means cheaper airfare and cheaper hotels.

However, you want to make sure that it’s not the low season because of bad weather. Sometimes that is the case, but sometimes it’s just because school is in session so some destinations just don’t receive as many visitors.

Clear your search history.

Whatever you do, please clear your search history before you start looking at airfare after you have searched the first time. Airfare websites usually save your searches, which means that they know you want to buy and therefore may increase the prices because they know they have you locked in.

Fly on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.

These are usually the cheapest days to fly. If you want to fly on Sunday, Monday or Friday, you usually have to pay a higher price because that is usually when everyone else wants to fly to or from their destinations. Being flexible with your travel dates by just a day or two can maybe save you HUNDREDS of dollars. Isn’t that crazy?

Don’t book too early, and don’t book too late.

This is a hard tip to follow, but in general it is a good one so I couldn’t leave it out of this post.

You usually don’t want to book too early, such as 8 months or more ahead of time. However, you also don’t want to book too late. If you wait until the day before you want to leave, the chances of you paying an astronomical amount for your plane ticket is very high.

For the most part, you need to do research on your specific destination on when the best time to buy is. Domestic and international destinations can vary greatly!

  1. I use a price tracker like yapta.com to track airfares, and it sends a notice when the price drops. Unfortunately, there is no real tried and true method. I thought I struck gold when I bought tickets from the US to Jakarta at $1000, then they went down to $880. Ugh! :)
